Teaching Children Values

Teaching Values to Children

We’ve all been there as parents.  Picture this:  Your son or daughter can’t find their shoes, and it is time to leave.  You are already late to school. The chaos begins.  There might even be some crying, maybe raised voices throughout the frantic search.  The shoes are finally found, but your comments about responsibility continue in the car all the way to school.  Your child gets out of the car, and you both feel bad.  Sound familiar?

Just imagine if you could teach responsibility in a way that is proactive and done in a calm environment.  Picture this: It is dinner time and a special candle, the Candle of Honor is sitting at your child’s place setting.  You light the candle and praise her for all the responsible things she did that day:  put her shoes on the shoe rack, hung up her coat, did her school assignment and practiced her piano.  You tell her how proud you are of her over and over again.

You have a conversation about responsibility and talk about heroes in your lives that exude responsibility. When the meal is over, your child receives a special key (engraved with the word responsibility and strung on a pretty ribbon) which is hers to wear for the next week.
As parents, we have a choice:  do we want our children to remember the morning shoe fiasco, or the dinner filled with conversations that help shape who they are today?

If your answer is like most parents, you want the second choice but you probably need support and guidance.   That support can be found through the ideas and tools created by Once Upon a Family.  We believe the best way to teach values and form positive relationships and strong family ties starts with simple traditions that happen daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or once in a while.

All of our products are the results of years of research that suggest what children remember the most are the things they do over and over again.  We offer an assortment of tools guaranteed to build positive relationships, inspire family time and bring out the best character traits in every member of your family.

Once Upon a Family offers:

• Conversation Starters to get you talking about things that are really important.
• Lesson for Little Ones ~ a monthly program (available on autoship) where families focus on a value all month long with guided activities that are fun and educational.
• Keys of Happiness with engraved values that your child can wear with pride.
• The Gift of Values Journal which teaches your child 12 valuable values in creative, fun ways.
• Dates with Dad ~ a special journal for a father and child to enjoy a monthly date where lots will be learned by both.
• Family Fun Box to inspire weekly uninterrupted family time filled with laughter and fun.

Remember that crazy, insane morning scene where you are trying to get out the door, and nothing seems to be going right?  Albert Einstein once defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”.  If you are ready for new results, then explore the tools at Once Upon a Family, and watch as your children grow into responsible, productive citizens ~ even at home.
